Charles City approves next phase of drainage improvement project

Charles City, Iowa – The next phase of improving storm water runoff issues in Charles City is moving forward.

Council members approved plans for the 2019 drainage improvement project, which includes three areas according to City Administrator Steve Diers.

Excess run off from rain has created drainage buildup in low areas due to limited storm sewer intakes.  The run off negatively impacts businesses.

While the number of storm sewer intakes seems to be one of the main causes, Diers added other issues are the slope of surrounding properties, run off from roofs and side yard drainage.

Diers says this is problematic at the Art Center where they plan to construct a separate drain moving the water away as it inundates their basement.

The final plans and specifications will be decided at the August 5 meeting and the bid process is on August 1.
