UPDATED: Early morning fire destroys Greene Lumber Company

Greene, Iowa – An early morning fire has destroyed the Greene Lumber Company after the building has been the town’s anchor for more than 130 years.

Emily Ascher and her husband have owned the business for eight years.

According to Greene Fire Chief Neil Nordmeyer, they received the call just after 3 a.m. Monday and upon arrival the blaze engulfed the building.

He told North Iowa News, flames could be seen for several miles making it one of the hottest he’s battled.

Seven area departments helped distinguish the fire.  Monday marked the second time in as many weeks, the building caught on fire.

He says he doesn’t think the two are related, but couldn’t confirm until the state fire marshal investigates.

Nordmeyer says the loss is a devastating blow to the community.

Ascher says no plans have been decided but they’ll take it ‘one day at a time.’
