Hearing-impaired family receives smoke, CO detectors from community donations

Charles City, Iowa – A Charles City family who has hearing impaired children will now be able to rest easier due to a donation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors from the Elks Lodge and Fire Department.
Joseph Brennan’s three of his seven children have cochlear implants.
Brennan says 12-year-old Janessa, 6-year-old Klayton and 3-year-old Claudia have a genetic condition which robbed them of their hearing.
He says the technology is a relief to have.
The family will receive four detectors worth $660 according to Fire Chief Eric Whipple. The Elks Lodge and Fire Department each donated half of the money.
Whipple says the major difference between regular alarms and these is a strobe light.
Brennan added these are the cheapest alarms of their kind as the least expensive he’s found have been $200.
The Elks Lodge has a long history of supporting fire safety and community activism.
