Charles City, Iowa – The Charles City Fire Department has been busy out on calls this week – not for fires – but to visiting local schools and getting ready for their pancake feed Sunday.
Fire Chief Eric Whipple says they help spread safety tips during fire prevention week.
He says each year in October, firefighters celebrate it nationwide with a special theme.
This year it’s having an escape plan.
In addition to having an escape plan, Whipple added there are other tips to keep in mind this fall.
He says with the temperatures dropping, most of us will turn on our heater and be mindful of the silent killer: carbon monoxide.
He also suggests not plugging a space heater into an extension cords- as that’s where many fires begin.
Whipple says as the holiday seasons approach, pay attention to lighting candles.
He also recommends to change batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with daylight savings time.
Fire prevention week culminates with the pancake feed from 8-12:30 on Sunday with a free will donation.
