Charles City Kmart set to close in early 2020

According to multiple sources, the Charles City Kmart on 1405 South Grand Avenue is closing its doors permanently in February of 2020. This will be the collapse of one of the last Kmarts in the entire state of Iowa, pushing Algona’s superstore to the sole survivor.

Erica Franzen, a Charles City Kmart worker, posted on Facebook saying, “We do not know when the sales will start for sure yet.. We are still doing black Friday stuff and Christmas of course.. So please continue to support your local Charles city Kmart until the end! Thank you..”

Google reviews on the Charles City Kmart are mixed, and out of 97 reviews the store averages 3.2 stars out of 5. The five star rating reviews on the page, credit the department store for carrying a ‘wide variety,’ of merchandise. The one star reviews complain that the store was way too large for how poorly ‘staffed,’ it was.

A Wall Street Journal published in early October reported: “Roughly a quarter of the 425 Sears and Kmart stores that financier Edward Lampert bought out of bankruptcy have closed or are closing, according to people familiar with the situation, a retreat the chains haven’t fully disclosed.”

North Iowa News will continue to find out details on the closing and have them on KCHAnews.com as soon as possible.
