Heinz G. Engel, Age 88 of New Hampton, Iowa died Friday, January 31st at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, February 8th at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton. Friends may greet the family at the church two hours prior to the service.
Heinz G. Engel was born May 20, 1931 to Hans and Ella (Hayungs) Engel in Flensburg, Germany. Heinz grew up during World War II and lived in various cities. The family settled in Bad Zwischenahn, Germany after the war. Heinz finished trade school as a cabinet maker in 1948. On January 16, 1950 he boarded the SS Washington in Hamburg, arrived in New York and took the bus to New Hampton, IA arriving on January 24, 1950. He made his home with his grandparents on a farm near Bassett, IA. He began working for Charles City Manufacturing and a year later began to work for Stolz Construction Co in New Hampton. In 1964 Heinz became a partner in the company which he ran until his retirement in May of 1993.
On November 14, 1954 Heinz was united in marriage to Shirley Sonius at St. John Lutheran Church in Woden, IA. To this union 3 children were born. The couple lived and raised their children in New Hampton.
Heinz was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a charter member of the New Hampton Jaycees, a member of the New Hampton Fire Department and the Masons and the Shriners.
He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, reading, riding his bike, walking and wood working.
He is survived by his wife Shirley, his three children: Laura (Mark) Zipse of Clear Lake, IA; Wayne Engel of Eden Prairie, MN; and David (Renae) Engel of St. Paul, MN. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Michelle (Richard) Marks, Chad (Kaylee) Engel, Gretchen (Brian) Fisher, Edward (Amanda) Zipse, Brian (Janelle) Zipse, Kerbie (Aaron) Dahlen, Kacey (Justin) Gansen, Kirsten (Mike Pilarczyk) Engel, Kei (Rachel) Engel. Heinz is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, by a sister Karin Naeve of Rostrup, Germany a brother Klaus (Annaliese) Engel of Jever, Germany and two brother-in-laws John (Judy) Sonius of Britt, IA and Richard (Linda) Sonius of Osceola, IA
Heinz was preceded in death by his parents, by one brother-in-law Peter Naeve of Rostrup, Germany and a sister-in-law Gloria Haugen of Klemme, IA.
