During the long winters of Iowa, tree branches get mangled and many even die. The ultimate time to prune a tree is during the late winter months – between February and early March. In other words, it is soon the optimal time to give those fury sticks a haircut.
According to Jeff Otto of Otto’s Oasis in Charles City, a tree owner should wait until after the threat of severe cold weather is gone to begin pruning.
Otto says a normal hand pruner or branch saw should be able to conquer those mangled branches – unless it is a thicker shade tree – to which one should get larger equipment for the job.
