Charles City school board discuss lunch options for low-income families

Nobody wants a Comet to go without lunch – especially the Charles City school board. Secretary Paige Elsbernd explained that a child only gets cut off from eating when their balance is negative $30 or more – at which point, free and reduced meal plans are available for families unable to create enough income to support their children fully.

Elsbernd says the delinquent account balance for Charles City is hovering around $455. She explains this far less than other counties – which she heard some have tens of thousands owed to them.

The board can safely say, as of February 10th in Charles City, not a single family has a child who isn’t able to eat.

But when the situation presents itself, a child who is unable to afford lunch can get it covered through a rainy-day fund that locals can donate to at any time.
