4A Iowa high school football receives competitive balance changes

Iowa 4A high school football is shifting its focus to obtain competitive balance among the games. The first act came when the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSSA), announced Mason City, Burlington, and Des Moines Hoover would all moving from 4A to 3A.

The big push for competitive balance comes with what IHSSA member and Osage Superintendent Barb Schwamman calls the, “success model.”

Creating new districts for the one year could be a rousing success – and the plan would be then to implement the changes into all the classes, but Schwamman says there are also drawbacks to this experiment.
