MercyOne New Hampton receives permission to close down street for coronavirus testing

Coronavirus testing will soon be available all over Iowa. MercyOne New Hampton Medical Center is working ahead. MercyOne asked the New Hampton city council for permission to shut down a block of North Maple Avenue so the hospital can test for COVID-19 without patients having to get out of their cars; they received permission on Friday.

According to the New Hampton Tribune, MercyOne’s PR Director Jennifer Monteith said this about the future closing: “It’s not going to happen until we get the supplies and the PPE [personal protective equipment] in place, but we wanted to make sure the city would be OK with what we were planning.”

Right now, there aren’t enough test kits to require a street closing, but bigger cities are currently installing similar drive-up operations.
