Red Cross to hold Emergency Blood Drive in Charles City

Rolling into the summer months – the country’s blood supply dries up. Shortages are synonymous with being reported in late June and July in America. But this year, it is even more crucial. Due to the virus outbreak, the Red Cross is hosting an Emergency Blood Drive. This event will be held at the Charles City YMCA on May 11th from noon to 5 p.m.

One might ask, ‘what does an emergency blood drive even mean?’ and volunteer Lilly Usher is here to answer that:

But according to Usher, the drive will be classified as ‘emergency’ for many other reasons.

Even with stringent precautions at the drive, questions still linger. For instance, for people who have the virus but are asymptomatic, is it possible the blood taken could be infected and be passed to others?

Usher encourages every healthy person to consider donating to the drive – as clean blood is needed more than ever.
