Charles City schools talk ‘Return to Learn’ plan; Sunday’s commencement

Charles City schools are planning on opening on time – August 25th. In what capacity – is really the question hanging on everyone’s minds. Every Iowa school was required to create a ‘Return to Learn’ plan by July 1st and present it to the state. Charles City did this and will release the full details of the plan next week – prior to the July 20 Board of Education Return to Learn Plan presentation.

Superintendent Mike Fisher asks the community for ‘grace’ as the planning changes almost week to week.

The school also wanted to again follow up on the incident where a Comet baseball player was heckled by racist comments by Waverly fans at an away game.

The school says they are taking specific steps:

  • Representatives from the Charles City Senior Leadership team are meeting with the leadership of the other school district next week.
  • The Executive Director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union will be meeting with Charles City Senior Leaders to use this situation as a catalyst for statewide change.
  • We are working with the NEIC conference to develop systems to counteract systemic bigotry and improve sportsmanship.
  • Charles City Community Schools specifically lists equity as a strategic goal of the Charles City Community Schools. We will continue to live our mission of regardless of who you are or what your story is, you can learn and be loved in Charles City Community Schools.

Lastly, Class of 2020 Commencement will be held this Sunday, July 12 at the Charles City High School Comet Field starting at 5:30 P.M. All graduates need to meet near the football field scoreboard at 5:00 P.M. wearing their cap and gown.
