MLB has confirmed that the game between the Chicago White Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals that was to be contested in Dyersville at the Field of Dreams movie site has now been canceled citing the pandemic as a reason. MLB has announced that the game will be held next year, in August. Commissioner of Baseball Robert D. Manfred, Jr. said: “We made every effort to go ahead with a first-class event for the people of Iowa, admirers of the film and fans generally. Unfortunately, we have come to the conclusion that it would not be prudent to ask Clubs to step outside their normal routines, given the evolving public health challenges. We hope to host this event in Iowa in 2021.”
“MLB at Field of Dreams” would have marked the first time a Major League Baseball game was ever played in the state of Iowa. The concept of the game had been in talks between the owners of the Field of Dreams movie site and MLB since 2015. Iowans, who had shown great excitement for the game since it was announced in August 2019, will have to wait another year for the chance to see MLB baseball in their backyard. While it is not yet determined who the opponent will be, MLB has confirmed that the White Sox will be a participant.
