Classic Cleaners on 1110 North Grand Avenue in Charles City reopened for business in January of this year – now come September 15th, it will be gone again. This time ‘for good’.
The business Facebook account posted:
“A sad announcement:
We are closing for good due to business conditions brought on by the pandemic. Our last day in business will be September 15, 2020. Please pick up your items prior to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday the 15th. Thank you to all of our wonderful customers, and to all the incomparable employees of yesterday and today.”
The shop was closed for the first time in 2019 for almost two months while being tied up in legal troubles with McQuillen Place Co. LLC, which is owned by Charles Thomson. Classic Cleaners was originally going to move into the downtown McQuillen Place, before the property filed for bankruptcy.
Thomson, the majority owner of the shop, purchased the Classic Cleaner’s business assets and this helped push to reopen the building in January.
Now, Charles City dry cleaning options are cut virtually in half.
