The Charles City girls basketball team is weeks away from starting practice – and up until yesterday, the school hadn’t announced who would be the head coach of the team.
Then, Charles City schools released a news flash:
“Tyler Downing, a 15-year coaching veteran, will be named the Charles City High School head girls basketball coach of his alma mater pending board approval by the Charles City Community School District Board of Education Monday evening.”
Downing says one of the biggest reasons he applied for the job was to give the varsity girls an opportunity to compete.
Downing currently works as a social studies teacher for the Charles City High School and his multi-sports coaching background includes 15 years of coaching Comet baseball, 11 years coaching 7th-grade boys basketball, assistant coach to the high school boys team, 8 seasons leading 7th-grade football, girls middle school track and field coach, and 4 years as assistant high school football coach.
Downing says his coaching style focuses on fundamentals over everything else.
His only expectation for year 1 for the girls is that they play hard.
