Scholarship being created in memory of Charles City teacher who died of COVID-19

A member of the Charles City school district died from COVID-19 complications earlier in November. Her name was Darla Arends and she was a 58 year old special education at the high school.

According to Mike Fisher, one of the many reasons the district closed school down both Thursday and Friday of last week, was to give the staff some room to grieve this death.

Now some staff and friends of Arends have decided to remember her by attempting to create a scholarship with her namesake.

Former German teacher at the high school Marilyn Buttjer is accepting donations for the ‘Darla Arends Scholarship Fund’ through December 12th and asks anyone who would like to donate to send the money to Marilyn Buttjer at 1911 Salzer St., both in Charles City, IA 50616.

The scholarship will be given out to a present or past graduate of the high school who has plans to follow a career in teaching or a technical field.
