Charles City Rotary Club helps establish ‘Ellen Bengtson Memorial Scholarship Fund’

The Rotary Club of Charles City is requesting the community’s support to help establish the Ellen Bengtson Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Ellen Bengtson was a Charles City Rotary Club member and an environmental engineer at Cambrex Charles City, Inc. Her life ended in a tragic bicycle accident near Charles City on August 2, 2020.

Rotary Member Randy Heitz says that while Ellen was alive, she was very important to Charles City.

The Ellen Bengtson Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a female student applicant who is pursuing a degree in engineering, math or chemistry at an accredited post-secondary institution.

Heitz says the Rotary Club has been in close contact with Ellen’s parents while developing this fund.

Some of the contributions:

  • A $10,000 commitment from Cambrex in Charles City
  • An anonymous donor, honoring Ellen’s love of music, is generously offering a $500 dollar-for-dollar match challenge to the members of the Charles City Community Chamber Orchestra to encourage donations

To donate to the Ellen Bengtson Memorial Scholarship Fund, please contact Terry Gaumer, affiliate development director with the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, at (319) 243-1354 or tgaumer@cfneia.org.
