Chickasaw County comes together to remember Anamosa State Prison victims

New Hampton, IA – Approximately 25 people braved the cool air and wind Tuesday evening to pay their respects and honor the lives of the two Anamosa State Prison employees that were killed last Tuesday morning while trying to stop a prison escape attempt.

Nurse Lorena Schulte and Correctional Officer Robert McFarland were attacked and killed by two inmates with hammers.  In honor of the two victims, a “memorial walk/run” was held at the New Hampton high school track, which coincided a run that was held in Anamosa High School Tuesday night.  Sheila Ferrell, a 911 operator at the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office and has ties to the Anamosa community along with the prison organized the local event.

Members of local law enforcement, fire departments, rescue squad, ambulance as well as several family members and friends participated.

Ryan Shawver, a deputy sheriff spoke of the importance of the event.

New Hampton 46 year firefighter veteran Marty Onken walked the mile course to pay tribute to McFarland, who was also a member of the Ely Fire Department.
