Central Park in Charles City now features a new flag memorial thanks to the local Lions Club.
The memorial was dedicated with a ceremony Monday morning. Club President Dean Tjaden told the crowd the project was the latest example of the support citizens have given their organization throughout their 100 year existence.
Tjaden says the community has helped the club raise almost $305,000 just since 2013. The new memorial consists of an United States flag, an Iowa flag and a Floyd County flag to eventually be replaced by a Charles City flag, which Mayor Dean Andrews says is still in the design phase. He says after a contest to solicit concepts for the flag resulted in almost 30 entries, they’re taking the best features of those submissions to come up with the flag’s final design.
