Charles City Hydrant Flushing Begins

The Charles City Water Department began flushing the city’s water distribution system Monday and the process is scheduled to continue through May 28th.

The annual flushing of the hydrants is necessary to remove any deposits that may build up on the interior walls of the underground water mains. The process helps ensure water quality is maintained throughout the system. Customers may experience fluctuations in pressure and/or discoloration of their water during flushing.

The City says the process also allows the Water Department to operate all fire hydrants in the distribution system and identify any maintenance requirements for each individual fire hydrant.

If you experience discolored water, run your cold water tap until it clears.  During periods of discoloration, you’re advised to postpone washing clothes and limit your use of hot water. Any issues will be resolved in a short time.

If you have any questions or concerns, contact the Water Department at 641-257-6315.
