Three people were injured in a two-vehicle wreck about seven miles north of Charles City Monday afternoon.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2005 Chevy suburban driven by 19-year-old Elizabeth Schmidt of Charles City was westbound on Floyd County Road B33, near the Floyd Volunteer Fire Department, when she attempted to pass a road maintenance grader. A cloud of dust created by the road grader caused poor visibility and Smith was unable to see the eastbound 2015 Ford Edge driven by 35-year-old Brandon Hummel of Riceville and the two vehicles collided head on shortly before 2:30 p.m.
Schmidt was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Mason City by Mercy AirMed, while Hummel and 20-year-old Joseph Holzer, a passenger in Schmidt’s vehicle, were both transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Schmidt has since been transferred to the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester. All three were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The accident remains under investigation. The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, the Floyd and Colwell fire departments, and Charles City EMS also assisted at the scene.
