Dispute Over Trash Gets Mason City Main Jail Time

A dispute over garbage has earned a north Iowa man over two weeks in jail.

Court records show 51-year-old Joseph Upshaw of Mason City has pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily injury following a dust-up over trash on October 12th, 2020. Authorities say Upshaw argued with another person over the placement of trash bins in the 500 block of 1st Street Northeast in Mason City. The victim then took Upshaw’s garbage and threw it into Upshaw’s yard. Investigators say Upshaw retaliated by hitting the victim in the head with a blunt object.

Upshaw was sentenced to 17 days in jail, one year of supervised probation, and ordered to pay a $430 fine.
