Number of Tornadoes in Iowa Low Thus Far in 2021

Thus far in 2021, there have only been two confirmed tornadoes in Iowa, both in eastern Iowa.

April, May and June are prime months for twisters and this past weekend marked the halfway point of severe weather season. National Weather Service Meteorologist Craig Cogil says things have been really quiet considering Iowa sees 12 or 13 tornadoes by this time of year.

Cogil attributes the low tornadic activity to the long stretches of at-or-below normal temperatures. While the threat of severe weather to date has been small, he says expect that to change with the arrival of warmer weather in the coming weeks.  He adds, “There are some signs that it may become more active here in the next week or two.”

There were 28 tornadoes that touched down in Iowa last year, which is well below the average number of around 50. This past Saturday marked the 53rd anniversary of the infamous May 15th, 1968 tornado that devastated Charles City.
