Driver That Hit, Killed Charles City Bicyclist Identified, Charged

Last week, about 40 area bicyclists participated in a “Ride of Silence” through Charles City in honor of Ellen Bengston and other bicyclists struck and killed while riding their bikes in Floyd County. Monday, a Clarksville man was charged with homicide in the death of Bengston.

On August 2nd, 2020, the 24-year-old Bengston was struck and killed by a pickup while riding her bike south on Floyd County Road T-64 shortly after 7:30 p.m. Authorities have identified the pickup driver as 44-year-old Colby Elliot, who was arrested Monday on a charge of homicide by vehicle-reckless driving.

According to court records, Elliot was also driving south on T-64 when his vehicle struck Bengston, knocking her into the west ditch about two miles south of Charles City. She later died as a result of her injuries. An investigation into the incident indicates Elliot was distracted while attempting to read a message on his cell phone at the time he hit Bengston.
