Second Anniversary of Floyd County Fairgrounds Tornado Thursday

For the second time this month, the Charles City area is remembering a tornado anniversary.

Thursday (05.27) marked the second anniversary of the tornado that struck the Floyd County Fair Fairgrounds and surrounding areas just west of town on May 27th, 2019. Fair Board President Amy Staudt, who was at the fairgrounds when the tornado hit early that afternoon, made these comments afterwards.

After the storm, the National Weather Service estimated max wind speeds of 100-110 miles per hour to classify it as a “high-end EF1.” tornado. The twister reportedly tracked to the north and east, nearly missing Charles City itself. A second tornado touched down northeast of Elma shortly after the first twister, then tracked through Chickasaw and Howard Counties before leaving a path of damaged homes, roofs and downed power lines in Lime Springs.

Earlier this month was the 53rd anniversary of the huge May 15th, 1968 tornado that devastated Charles City and killed 13 people.
