Charles City to Recoup DNR Money on New Wastewater Treatment Plant

Building the new wastewater resource reclamation facility in Charles City is back on schedule thanks to dry weather this spring. Now, the City is getting some money back on the project thanks to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The City has a low-interest loan for the project through the DNR and City Administrator Steve Diers informed the City Council at their regular meeting Monday night that they’ve received notification the DNR will return almost $1 million upon the completion of the plant.

Diers says the City qualified for the loan “rebate” thanks to national financial relief available to project applications submitted in 2019 and 2020. The total price tag for the wastewater treatment plant is about $20 million and with construction back on track, city officials are hopeful it will be completed next spring and the plant could be online serving residents by June of 2021.
