Apply Soon for Rental, Utility COVID Assistance

North Iowans struggling to make rent and/or utility payments due to the pandemic still have time to apply for state assistance.

The program’s goal is to help renters avoid eviction because of economic hardships brought on by COVID-19. Those applying must be able to show COVID’s financial impact in order for the Iowa Finance Authority to provide assistance with past due payments incurred no earlier than March 13th, 2020.Charles City Housing and Redevelopment Authority Director Katie Nolte says anyone in the Floyd County area who’s eligible can apply.

Nolte says those approved for assistance could get up to 12 months of rent and utility payments covered, with payments going directly to the utility company and landlords. She adds it’s vital to let the landlord know you’re applying for assistance, because they must verify your rent amount and any past due balances. Nolte also advises applying soon for the program.

Nolte says there’s also a foreclosure program still available through the Iowa Finance Authority to help homeowners with up to four months of back payments.
