While possessing fireworks is legal in Iowa, when and where you can set them off have been restricted in many communities.
Charles City Fire Chief Eric Whipple reminds residents that shooting off fireworks in city limits is not allowed and violators will be subject to a fine not less than $250 for the simple misdemeanor. He adds those living elsewhere in Floyd County should check your local ordinances.
For those who do shoot off fireworks, legally or not, Whipple advises doing so safely because there has been an uptick in fireworks injuries and fires across the state.
Whipple says don’t underestimate the power of fireworks and always keep a fire extinguisher and/or water close by in the event of a spot fire caused by shooting off fireworks.
