Thursday, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act to make June 19th a federal holiday.
Charles City City Councilman Phillip Knighten says Juneteenth was first celebrated by African Americans in Galveston, Texas on June 19th, 1865.
Knighten says while he wishes Juneteenth received more publicity, having the holiday officially recognized is a start. He says local observance of Juneteenth includes a picnic at Lions Field in Charles City Saturday at 2 p.m.
Knighten also encourages people to support black-owned businesses in the Charles City area.
