Driver of Truck That Struck, Killed Charles City Bicyclist Pleads Not Guilty

A Clarksville man charged with homicide by vehicle-reckless driving in the death of a Charles City bicyclist last summer is pleading not guilty.

In May, law enforcement identified 44-year-old Colby Elliot as the driver of the truck that struck and killed 24-year-old Ellen Bengston while she was riding her bike south of Charles City shortly after 7:30 p.m. on the night of August 2nd, 2020.

Court documents state Elliott was driving south on Floyd County Road T-64 and was distracted opening up an app on his cell phone to read a message. Bengston was riding her bike on the right side of the white fog line when authorities say she was hit by Elliott’s pickup and knocked into the west ditch. She later died as a result of her injuries.

Elliott is scheduled to stand trial beginning September 28.
