Weather Experts Rate Tornado Near Charles City as EF-1

For a period, the tornado that moved through Floyd County Wednesday evening has been classified with EF-1 status.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in LaCrosse says max wind speeds of the tornado reached around 90 miles per hour when it came near Floyd shortly after 5:30 p.m. The length of the tornado was approximately 11 miles, stretching from about three miles north of Rockford to five miles northwest of Charles City.

The NWS says a separate tornado near Oelwein was an EF-0 with a max wind speed of 70 miles per hour. That twister caused damage to Oelwein High School’s football stadium.  A tornado also left damage in Waverly.

Floyd County Emergency Management Coordinator Drew Mitchell says the weather situation turned quickly late yesterday afternoon.

Mitchell says the county was fortunate to escape significant damages from the tornadic activity.

Mitchell, who also serves on the Floyd County Fair Board, was on the fairgrounds when the day started with a severe thunderstorm.  He says it was a scramble to divert fairgoers to shelter, but they were able to keep everyone safe.
