A one-vehicle accident Monday about five miles southeast of Lime Springs injured two occupants and a firefighter responding to the wreck.
The Howard County Sheriff’s Office says they received a report of a motor vehicle accident just after 1 p.m. A GMC Yukon driven by 67-year-old Valentine “Neil” Mahr of rural Lime Springs was northbound on Pleasant Avenue when Mahr experienced a medical episode, then went in the east ditch and over the embankment, crossing 70th Street and struck another embankment. Cresco Fire and Rescue had to extricate Mahr and a passenger, his wife, 64-year-old Janelle Mahr.
Both were transported to Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital by ambulance and later airlifted to Mayo Clinic in Rochester. One firefighter received minor injuries during extraction and was treated by EMS at the scene.
The Iowa State Patrol, Howard County Ambulance Service, Howard County First Responders, Cresco Towing and Recovery, MiEnergy Cooperative, and Howard County Secondary Roads also assisted at the scene.
