Safety Tips if Caught Outside in Severe Weather

The tornado that came through the Charles City area July 14th entered Floyd County to the north of Rockford.

Floyd County Conservation oversees the nearby Fossil and Prairie Center as well as the Tosanak Nature Area north of Marble Rock. Executive Director Adam Sears says there were some anxious moments, but they were fortunate to avoid any serious damage.

He also has advice for anyone who might be using their trails or campgrounds and gets caught outdoors during severe weather.

Sears says the best way to avoid getting caught is to monitor the weather before you head out, and if severe weather is possible or imminent, stay home.

He adds that when severe weather like the recent tornado develops, conservation staff will check their nature areas for patrons and direct them to safe shelter or leave the park if necessary.
