Excessive Heat Watch Issued Wednesday for Portions of North Iowa

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines has issued a mid-week Excessive Heat Watch for more than half the state, including at least five north Iowa counties

The NWS says the watch will be in effect from Wednesday morning to Wednesday evening for 51 central Iowa counties including Bremer, Butler, Cerro Gordo, Franklin, and Worth. In addition to temps reaching the mid-to-upper 90s, dangerously hot and humid conditions with heat index values of 102 to 110 degrees are possible.

The NWS says the extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. Officials advise drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air- conditioned room, staying out of the sun as much as possible, and checking up on relatives and neighbors.

The NWS also warns that young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
