Process to Move Historic Train Depot in Charles City Underway

The process of moving the historic Milwaukee Railroad train depot to a new home in Charles City is moving forward..

Crews from Kamm Excavating of Charles City began digging around the building’s foundation last week to allow Thein Structural Moving of Clara, Minnesota to start their preparations to move the depot from its current site on North Grand Avenue to its new home about two blocks to the south. Charles City Mayor Dean Andrews says the physical relocation of the building will occur in two parts.

Andrews says preparing the depot for the actual move will take about three weeks and it’s hoped that will start mid-August. He adds the project is still on track to have the relocation completed by early September.

Close to $360,000 has been raised by “Save the Depot” to pay for the moving of the depot, which was originally built in 1912 and was in danger of being demolished before the effort to preserve the structure, was launched in December of 2019.
