Floyd County Special Election Results Made Official

The results of last week’s special election vote on how future members of the Floyd County Board of Supervisors are elected are now official.

The vote was canvassed Tuesday by the supervisors and the final count showed, as on election night, that Plan 3 received 67.1% of the ballots to win approval. That plan calls for establishing three equal population districts with one supervisor elected from each district who must reside in that district. Plan 1, which has been in use since 1970, electing all three supervisors at-large, received 27% of the vote.

The county must now begin the process of drawing district lines, but is in a holding pattern while receiving clarity on the deadline to establish those districts in advance of the primary election in next June, the first election related to the new format. County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Gloria Carr says the county also needs to get the latest census numbers, due out Thursday,  which will also determine state lines for U.S. congressional districts and could impact the county’s districts.

Supervisors discussed the redistricting at their regular meeting Tuesday, including the formation of a commission to oversee the process. Supervisor Roy Schwickerath said the committee needs a good cross-representation of the county.

The board tabled any definitive action until their next regular meeting on August 24th to allow for more time to gather more information on the redistricting process.
