Sale of Former Simply Essentials Plant Moves Closer to  Done Deal

Pending a hearing next month, the sale of the former Simply Essentials chicken plant in Charles City has moved one step closer to becoming a “done deal.”

In a recent bankruptcy auction, the sale of the facility and its equipment to International Poultry Breeders (IPB) was tentatively approved for $9.5 million dollars. The company, which is based in Jamaica, but does business in the U.S under the name, Best Dressed Chicken, was the lone bidder in the auction after Pure Prairie Farms decided not to participate.

The plant closed just over two years ago on August 5, 2019. Charles City Area Development Corporation Executive Director Tim Fox says the sale has been a long time coming, but isn’t sure what’s next for the facility that once employed about 400 people.

A hearing has been set for September 3rd in Sioux City to hear any objections to the sale and take action on a motion by a bankruptcy trustee to sell the plant to IPB.
