Lynn Poppen, 91, Charles City

Lynn Poppen, 91, of Charles City, passed away Monday, August 23, 2021 at Clarksville Nursing and Rehab in Clarksville.

A private graveside service will be held at Sunnyside Memory Gardens and a celebration of Lynn’s life will be held at a later date.

Lynn Leroy Poppen, the son of Harm and Anna (Hoodjer) Poppen, was born on June 23, 1930 in Allison. He graduated from Allison High School. After graduation he served in the United States Army. He then attended University of Northern Iowa (ISTC at the time) in Cedar Falls and graduated with a bachelor’s degree. Lynn was united in marriage to Margaret “Peg” Meyer on August 22, 1959.

Lynn completed one year of teaching before returning to his true passion of construction. He operated heavy machinery, helped dig many home basements, and built terraces. He later was an employee of Floyd County with road maintenance until his retirement in 1993.

Lynn was an active member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. He held many positions on the church council and was a member of the church choir. He was also a member of the Elks. Lynn loved to spend his time outdoors golfing and fishing. He enjoyed woodworking and hand crafted furniture. He was also a handyman and remodeled his own home and helped do projects around his children’s homes.

Living family members include his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret “Peg”; son, Joel (Josie) Poppen of Ankeny; daughter, Anne (Jerry) Magnuson of Hanlontown; grandsons: Andrew (Jenny) Poppen, Ben (Madison) Poppen, Cole Poppen, and Scott Magnuson; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Vern Poppen; sister, Mae Poppen; and twin sisters in infancy.

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City. As a young kid, he would always be caught singing along to songs on the radio. He says he's good at karaoke but we think otherwise. ;) In his free time, he enjoys beginning new projects at home and hardly ever finishing them. Chris lives in Charles City with his wife Vicki, daughter Brynlee and son Jaxon.
