In addition to raises going into effect Wednesday for current members of the Charles City Police force, officers new to the department could also qualify for additional income.
City Administrator Steve Diers says they’re now offering a signing bonus of $5,000 paid out over three years to certified officers joining the force. He says the bonus can offset the cost of hiring an uncertified officer and then paying for his or her training.
Diers says the City hopes the bonus will help attract and keep good officers and bring the police department back to full staff.
Diers says the City had to get more competitive in police pay when some of Charles City’s top officer pay was equal to other departments’ starting wages.
