Hillside Cemetery just south of Marble Rock lost several trees, but no headstones, when the second of two tornadoes moved through the area on August 27th.
Cemetery Association Secretary Diane Black, who’s also the caretaker of the grounds, says they were fortunate to have little damage to headstones during the storm.
Black says she and her husband live just south of the cemetery and the tornado was a close call.
Trees also fell on the graves of Black’s mom, dad, and grandparents but the headstones escaped damage; unlike the farm she rents east of the cemetery where a garage was destroyed.
Black commends the many volunteers from town who came out the day after the tornado to get roads through the cemetery back open.
