Northeast Iowa Motorcyclist Killed by Airborne Kayak

A northeast Iowa man is dead after the motorcycle he was driving was struck by an airborne kayak Labor Day weekend.

The Iowa State Patrol says 75-year-old John Thein of Guttenberg was killed shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday while riding his motorcycle north on Allamakee County Road X26 near Rossville. Thein suffered fatal injuries when his bike crashed after being struck by the kayak, which broke away from a trailer of kayaks being pulled by a northbound pickup driven by 69-year-old Andrew Wroble of Harpers Ferry.

The Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa DNR also assisted at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.
