Traffic flow on Highway 18 in Charles City has improved significantly in recent days.
The highway, which includes 4th Avenue and the Brantingham Bridge in town, has gotten its first layer of new asphalt. And more is on the way this week according to Ron Loecher, Resident Construction Engineer with the New Hampton office of the Iowa DOT.
Loecher says progress in the last week has also allowed for the removal of detours around the construction zone.
While detours have been removed, flaggers and pilot cars are still directing and/or leading vehicles through the construction, with most of the highway down to one lane while more asphalt is laid down.
Loecher says the project will also eventually repave Highway 18 four miles to the east of the city.
