Garbage collection rates are going up in Charles City, with larger waste producers paying more than others.
The City Council approved to raise the rates based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which increased by 2.7% from August 2020 to July 2021. City Administrator Steve Diers says the request for the rate increase came from the city’s waste collection service provider, Jendro Sanitation.
Jendro sought the rate increase to cover increased tipping fees they are charged at the Floyd, Mitchell, Chickasaw County Landfill, which Councilman Jerry Joerger noted was likely overdue.
The rate changes will increase the monthly garbage collection fee for 35-gallon containers by 47-cents; the 65-gallon containers by 86-cents; and 95-gallon containers by $1.36. The price of optional garbage bags will also go up 25-cents each.
Rate increases will go into effect October 1st and will first be reflected with the November billing.
