Iowa DCI to Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting in Mason City

An officer-involved shooting early Sunday morning in downtown Mason City is under investigation.

The Mason City Police Department says the incident began when an officers responded to a report of a fight and shots fired near the intersection of State Street and Federal Avenue shortly after 1 a.m.  When officers arrived on the scene, several people were seen  fleeing the area and an officer-involved shooting took place at that time.  

At the request of Mason City Police Chief Jeff Brinkley, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI)  has been called in to complete an investigation of the original shooting incident that occurred prior to the arrival of the officer and the officer involved shooting. The officer is on leave pending the outcome of the shooting investigation. 

Two people, including the suspect, were injured and taken to MercyOne North Iowa. The severity of those injured has not been released.

The Mason City Fire  Department, Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Clear Lake  Police Department, and Hancock County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
