Extension of Local Option Sales Tax in Charles City on Council Agenda Tonight

Extension of the one-cent local option sales tax (LOST) in Charles City is expected to take another step forward at tonight’s (10.18) regular City Council meeting.

The agenda tonight includes consideration of a prerequisite resolution to get the tax on the ballot for a vote. The next step would be for the council to officially decide in two weeks how the ballot will read to  reflect how the LOST proceeds will be spent. Prior discussions by city officials point towards the money continuing to be utilized for street and road maintenance and construction.

Floyd County also has a one-cent local option sales tax being used for rural road maintenance. Both the county’s and city’s LOST taxes are slated to end 10-year runs on December 31, 2022, but residents will be asked to extend taxes for another 10 years during a special election currently targeted for March 1, 2022.

Tonight’s Charles City City Council meeting starts at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
