County Public Health Departments Wait for Clarity on COVID Booster Shots

County public health departments are in a holding pattern on possible booster shots for those vaccinated with the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccines.

Friday, an FDA advisory committee unanimously voted to recommend the booster shots. However, Chickasaw County Public Health Administrator Lisa Welter says that since the FDA governing body nor the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has yet to officially approve the booster, departments like hers are unable to do a boost dose of Moderna or J&J at this time.

Welter adds that if they do not stay within the scope of the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for vaccinations, they would run the risk of having all of the county’s vaccine supplies taken away.

The FDA and ACIP are slated to meet later this week.

For now, the only vaccine booster shot approved is Pfizer, which has been recommended for people aged 65 and older and adults aged 50 to 64 with underlying medical conditions.
