Charles City Depot to Get Water, Sewer Access

Preparations to solidify the new home of the historic Milwaukee Railroad depot in Charles City continue to take shape.

The depot was moved over it’s new foundation at the corner of North Grand Avenue and 11th Avenue a week ago Monday, but additional prep work must be completed before the 1912 building can be put fully in its place. The American Passenger Train History Museum’s Bob Moen is coordinating the project and says Kamm Excavating of Charles City began excavating and roughing in water and sewer lines from Grand Avenue on Monday.

Moen says the inside of the depot will not have access to water and sewer yet, but that will be coming when they get to remodeling the interior.

Moen says once remodeling is complete, the depot will be able to host meetings, weddings, and bicyclists.

Moen says fundraising to cover the remodeling costs will begin after the depot is secured in place. He says that should occur in the next couple of weeks when a mason will “marry” the building to its new foundation with new concrete blocks.
