Funeral Services Set for Iowa State Patrol Trooper

Funeral services for an Iowa State Patrol Trooper who died last week from injuries he suffered in a crash while responding to a call have been set.

Trooper Ted Benda passed away Wednesday, October 20 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, six days after a crash in Allamakee County, north of Postville. Benda was on his way to assist the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office with a wanted suspect and crashed his squad car. Investigation of the wreck continues.

Public visitation for Benda is from 4 to 8 p.m. this evening at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, Benda’s hometown. There will be a public funeral at Waukon High School at 11 a.m. Wednesday.  A private burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waukon. The Martin-Grau Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Trooper Benda, who lived in Decorah, is survived by his wife and four girls, the youngest of which is less than one month old.  The Iowa Department of Public Safety says Benda became a state trooper in 2016, assigned to District 8 in Mason City, and most recently worked out of the District 10 office in Oelwein.

KCRG-TV 9 will be providing a live feed of the funeral service, including on their website ( and YouTube channel (
