Popcorn Fundraiser for New Hampton Daycare Center

While a $750,000 “Investing in Iowa Childcare” grant is a big boost to the expansion and relocation of Great Plays Daycare in New Hampton, it won’t cover the entire cost of the project.

The daycare has begun a capital campaign asking local businesses to help bridge the gap between the grant award and the projected total cost of about $900,000. Director Amy Ameling says they’re looking to raise about $152,000 and businesses, organizations or individuals wishing to donate are asked to contact New Hampton Economic Development. The center is also raising money through popcorn sales with the deadline to order being this Friday. Details can be found on the Great Plays Facebook page.

Ameling says the move into their new home in a wing of First United Methodist Church in New Hampton will allow them to increase their capacity from 54 kids to 97 children, but even with 43 more daycare spots, she has almost twice as many as that on a waiting list.

Ameling adds that along with their expansion and relocation also comes a new name, Little Sprouts.

Ameling says the daycare center’s current staff of nine will likely double with the new location.
