Group Pushing to Save the Mohawk Name in Mason City

The “Mason City Mohawk Save the Name” Facebook group has seen a ground swell of support in less than half a week in existence.

The group was launched by Tom Stalker on Saturday, November 20th, and already has over 2,200 followers. The group looks to lobby the Mason City School Board to reverse its decision last week to drop the “Mohawk” name and mascot, after the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Council of New York said they objected to the use of “Mohawk” by professional, collegiate and high school athletic teams.

The school district stopped use of the Mohawk name and mascot immediately with the school board decision with efforts to select a new mascot to ramp up in January with hopes of making a decision by July 1, 2021.

According to a Facebook post Monday, the “Save the Name” group has been granted time during the December 6th school board workshop session to state their case to bring Mohawks back. If successful with their argument at that time, it could come before the School Board for additional discussion during the December 20th regular board meeting.

Mohawks has been the nickname and mascot for the Mason City School District for almost 100 years.
